Duo Kursawe/Rovatkay - Ricercare

Two musicians, countless sound worlds:
With ricercares—as diverse as the eras in which they were created—Julia Kursawe and Adrian Rovatkay explore form, space, and sound.

Renaissance meets the present: from simple melodies emerge flowing lines, playful diminutions, and vibrant liveliness. The ricercares of the Renaissance open vast, almost cosmic spaces and invite reflection on one’s own existence. Contemporary works bring us close to emotion, tension, and resignation.

The instrumentation is surprising: the rare bass pommer snarls and sings, while the piccolo cello opens up newly composed sonic spaces. An intense programme that reimagines the ricercare—unusual, striking, and rich in variety.

JULIA KURSAWE
The Berlin-based musician, composer, and painter combines historical performance practice with contemporary music. She composes specifically for historical instruments and has been working with Adrian Rovatkay since 2022 in the series “ImPuls der Suite.”

ADRIAN ROVATKAY
The Berlin-based musician is a specialist in historical woodwind instruments such as the dulcian and baroque bassoon, and performs internationally as a soloist and ensemble player. In addition to early music, he is also active in contemporary and experimental projects.
